Pongal Celebration with Tribal Communities

Welfare Assistance Provided to 23 Tribal Families

Date: 11 January 2025

Venue: Sarkarpathy Mariamman Temple, Sarkarpathy

Area: Pollachi Forest Range, Anaimalai Tiger Reserve, Tamil Nadu

IYARKAYAI NESI PUBLIC CHARITABLE TRUST organized a traditional Pongal celebration in collaboration with the tribal communities residing in Nagaruth-1 and Nagaruth-2 Settlements, located in the Sarkarpathy area under the Pollachi Forest Range of the Anaimalai Tiger Reserve.

The celebration was held at the Sarkarpathy Mariamman Temple premises on 11 January 2025. Pollachi Sub-Collector A. Catherine Saranya graced the occasion as the Chief Guest and inaugurated the celebrations by participating in the traditional Uriyadi (pot-breaking) event.

Tribal families from both Nagaruth-1 and Nagaruth-2 Settlements participated enthusiastically in the celebrations and prepared Pongal as part of the traditional festivities.

As part of the Trust’s welfare initiative, new dhotis, sarees and other welfare assistance were distributed to 23 tribal families who participated in the Pongal celebrations.

The programme also featured a traditional Uriyadi competition for the youth and a Musical Chairs competition for women. The participants took part with great enthusiasm, and prizes were presented to the winners.

A community lunch was also organized, with more than 200 tribal people and members of the public participating in the meal.

The celebration served as an opportunity to strengthen the relationship between the Trust and the tribal communities while promoting Tamil heritage, traditional culture and community participation. The programme also emphasized the importance of living in harmony with nature and protecting forests and wildlife.

Through such initiatives, IYARKAYAI NESI PUBLIC CHARITABLE TRUST continues its efforts towards community welfare, cultural preservation, environmental awareness and nature conservation.
